Alenia Aermacchi and the Italian National Armaments Directorate signed a contract on Monday 22 December for a further three M-346 Master advanced trainer aircraft (identified as T-346A by the Italian Air Force). The contract includes a ground base training system and relevant logistic support included and is worth 120 million EUR, according to Alenia Aermacchi
The contract is part of a wider agreement already signed by the parties in 2009 for the total supply of 15 T-346s. At that time, a contract for a first tranche of six aircraft and related flight simulators was signed. The aircraft will work as the training aircraft for new generations of air force fast jet pilots, both Italian and international, at the Italian Air Force flight school in Lecce. Austria is one of the countries also sending pilots to Lecce – see our Austrian report here.
The T-346 is getting settled into its role at Lecce. Only last November, a fresh set of instructor pilot completed training on the new aircraft. Alenia Aermacchi says it now has 59 orders in the books from Italy, Singapore, Israel and Poland.
