‘German recce Tornados to Syria’

German Air Force Panavia Tornado reconnaissance aircraft are to join the campaign against so-called Islamic State (Daesh) forces, according to news reports on Thursday 26 November. France earlier this week asked Germany to step up its effort in Syria and Iraq.

A spokesperson of the German Bundeswehr confirmed the news, but parliamentary approval from Berlin is still needed. German recce Tornados did deploy to Afghanistan in 2007.

Replaced

Germany operated a sizable Tornado for years, operating the aircraft – designed in the seventies – from various airbases in the fighter-bomber, recce, and surpression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) role.

The type’s number are falling however, as the Eurofighter Typhoon is taking over duties. However, the Eurofighter thusfar is unable to cover all tasks. Recce and SEAD seems a task for Tornados for several years to come.
