Anti-drug ops Black Hawk police Colombia crashed

A Colombian Police Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed into a forest covered mountainous area in the Antioquia region, killing 16 police officers and critically wounding another two engaged in a counter-drug operation in the north of the country.

The accident has been confirmed by the Colombian Ministry of Defence. The cause of the crash is unknown, but officials believe that it flew into a mountain possibly due to low visibility.

The Black Hawk was one of three engaged in operations against the Clan Usuga right-wing paramilitary group of about 2,000 active men and women. The Black Hawk is one of about 70 helicopters in use by the Policía Nacional de Colombia.

The loss of the helicopter is the second serious crash in Colombia in just a week. On 31 July 11 service men lost their lives when a CASA CN235 went down.
