French Dassault Mirage 2000D fighter bomber jets flew the 1,000th mission in operation Chammal recently, the Ministry of Defense in Paris has said. Chammal is the name given to the French contribution to the campaign against IS in Iraq. The operation started in September 2014.
Operating from Jordan, two Mirage 2000D aircraft flew a 5 hour reconnaissance mission in the Mosul-area, supported by a French Navy Atlantique 2 surveillance and intelligence gathering aircraft.
France also has deployed Dassault Rafales, a C-135 tanker and a E-3F AWACS to the Middle East. Between February and April 2015, the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle also supported operations, adding twelve more Rafale plus Super Etendards and E-2 Hawkeyes to the mix.
At the height of the French contribution, forty aircraft were involved.
