The Italian Air Force is working to standardize and harmonize operations of both the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Alenia Aermacchi T-346A trainer. For that purpose, a T-346 was tested by the 20th Gruppo, based at Grosseto airbase and responsible for training Typhoon pilots.
The T-346 operated from Grosseto for one week until 22 May. The goal was to standardize the syllabi, flight manuals, procedures and phraseology between Lead In Fighter Training on the T-346 and training and operations on the Typhoon.
According to the Italian Air Force, the test delivered important results on interoperability and integration of both aircraft. The integrating data link that allows the T-346 to simulate complex combat scenarios was also used.
The test is an important step in the introduction of the M-346 into the Italian Air Force training program for combat pilots at Lecce airbase. In June, the T-346 and Typhoon will operate alongside each other once again. This time, the T-346 will also be used as ‘red air’ in Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT).
