One of the two dozen Dornier 228 maritime patrol and utility aircraft of the Indian Navy was lost at sea during a night flight on 24 March 2015. The aircraft ditched into the waters 20 nautical miles southwest of Goa.
Eight naval ships were immediately sent out of Indian naval bases INS Hansa and INS Kadamba to locate the crew of three, supplemented by two Indian Coast Guard vessels, two vessels of unknown origin and four aircraft. Crew commander Nikhil Kuldip Joshi was picked up by a commercial fishing boat, but for the lives of the other pilot and female observer is feared.
The Dornier 228-200 is known as a very reliable aircraft. The Indian Navy planned to have a fleet of 32 aircraft, which six recently ordered. With this weeks loss, the number goes down to 30 Do-228-200s and one Do-228-100.
