First S-76D SAR in action with Japan Coast Guard

The first Delta version of the Sikorsky S-76 has started search-and-rescue operations with the Japan Coast Guard.

The helicopter was delivered to Mitsubishi in July 2014 and became the first S-76D helicopter configured for SAR duties in Japan. The Japan Coast Guard is very accustomed to the S-76 model, flying various versions of the C-model since several years.

The new S-76D helicopter has the more powerful and efficient Pratt & Whitney Canada PW210S engines, an Thales TopDeck avionics system, a four-axis autopilot, a Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS), active vibration control and all-composite, so-called flaw-tolerant main rotor blades.

On 17 June 2013 Sikorsky confirmed the Japan Coast Guard order for 11 S-76Ds, to be delivered through Mitsubishi of Japan.
