Turkey is ordering four more F-35A Lightning II 5th generation fighter aircraft from Lockheed Martin, following the initial order for two aircraft in May 2014. The latest order was announced on 7 January, according to various sources.
In the end, Turkey hopes to order 100 F-35As. As a level III partner in the F-35 program, Turkey will in the future host maintenance facility for the fighter aircraft’s Pratt and Whitney F-135 engine. Flight training of Turkish F-35 pilots is expected to take place in the US, after which F-35 operations in Turkey should begin at Erhaç airbase.
