Russian-Italian coop to produce 160 helicopters

Russia and Italy will join forces to produce an initial 160 helicopters together for the Russian market. Russian state oil company Rosneft, Russian Helicopters’ mother company Rostec and Italian AgustaWestland’s mother company Finmeccanica signed trilateral agreement for strategic partnership on 29 December 2014.

A new Russian Helicopters-AgustaWestland joint venture will be launched to produce 160 AW189s the coming ten years, with oil company Rosneft as the third partner and first customer. Rosneft intends to use the choppers in its offshore business, and sell or use it as search-and-rescue helicopter.

The standard cabin of AW 189 is designed for transportation of 16 people. The maximal cruise speed is 154 knots (287 km / hour). The chopper has a maximal flying range of 600 nautical miles (1110 km) with additional fuel tanks.

AgustaWestland and Russian Helicopters were already in business together in the HeliVert joint venture, producing the lighter AW139 since June 2012.
