Italian Typhoons arrive in Lithuania

As announced earlier in December, Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons have taken over NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission in Lithuania. It marks the first time Italian EF2000s take part in defending the north eastern NATO flank.

The four Italian fighter aircraft arrived in Šiauliai on Monday 29 December according to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence. Polish MiG-29 Fulcrums are also expected here. Previously, the Lithuanian Airbase hosted Portuguese F-16s and Canadian CF-188 Hornets. Just before Christmas the Lithuanian Defence inaugurated six additional soft-shelters to accommodate the additional NATO fighter jets at Šiauliai.

Belgian F-16s will take the place of the Dutch F-16s in Malbork, Poland, wile Spanish Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons will fly to Ämari, Estonia to take the place of German Typhoons.
