The delivery of Mi-17V-5 military-transport helicopters to the Afghan National Army was completed in October 2014, state company Russian Helicopters announced on 30 October 2014.
Since the contract between Rosoboronexport and the US Department of Defense was signed in 2011, 63 helicopters produced at Kazan Helicopters, part of Russian Helicopters, have been delivered to Afghanistan. The helicopters supplied assist with the successful formation of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).
The Mi-17V-5 military transport helicopter is a modernised version of the Mi-8/17-type helicopters. It was developed by Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant’s design bureau with the participation of the Kazan Helicopter Plant with due regard to vast operational experience gained by its predecessors in a variety of armed conflicts, including in Afghanistan. Today, more than 2,400 Mil Mi-8/17-type helicopters are in service with more than 80 countries.
