The Uruguayan Air Force added a second-hand Beechcraft UB-55 Baron to its fleet in September. The light utility and liaison aircraft with two Continental IO-470-L piston engines is equipped with all-weather avionics.
The addition to the Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya is a relatively cheap solution, since the aircraft was taken from drug lords.
The UB-55 can travel up to 16,000 feet and has a maximum speed of 223 knots (413 kmh). It can remain airborne for 5.5 hours and is able to carry 5 passengers or 5,100 lbs (2313 kg) of cargo. The aircraft has been assigned to Escuadrón Aéreo Nº 7 based at Angel San Adami International Airport in Montevideo, where it will join the Cessna U-206 and T-41D aircraft. It is the only UB-55 of the FAU, which also has two somewhat similar UB-58s on strength.
