The skies over Angola will feature three new Airbus Helicopters EC225s, as SonAir took delivery of the three choppers through its lesser Milestone Aviation Group on 5 June 2014.

With the shipment of the Super Puma Mk2 – as the name for this type goes – the worldwide fleet of heli-lift rotorcraft in the oil and offshore business has increased further. Even with operator SonAir, which already flies a dozen EC225s, four AS332 L2 Super Pumas and three AS365 N3 Dauphins and is Africa’s largest offshore oil and gas operator.

Leasing company Milestone placed combined orders for 30 EC225s in 2012 and 2013. The type – originally fielded by Eurocopter but based on the French Aèrospatiale heritage – is the latest version of the Super Puma family, providing a medium-lift rotorcraft in the 10-11 metric ton category. It has a five-blade main rotor and low vibration levels. Many are deployed for search and rescue duties.
