The Venezuelan Air Force (Aviación Militar Bolivariana Venezolana) is set to get a yet unknown number of Chinese made HAIG L-15 supersonic jet trainers and light attack aircraft. The deal was confirmed by sources close to Venezuelan Defence Minister Carmen Meléndez Rivas.
The Hongdu Aviation Industry Corporation L-15 features two turbofan engines made in Ukraine or copies of this AI-222 power plant. The aircraft features two digital displays plus a HUD, a fly-by-wire system and a hands-on-throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) flight control.
The L-15 apparently has a maximum speed of 803 knots (or Mach 1.4) and a combat radius of more than 340 miles (550 km) or a ferry range of about 1900 miles (3100 km). The plane is able to climb up to 52,000 feet.
HAIG already delivered the L-15 to China’s own People’s Liberation Army Air Force, with at least 12 in service. The Zambia Air Force has ordered six aircraft. The Venezuelan Air Force already flies 15 older Hongdu K-8VV Karakorum light attack aircraft.
