The US Army Europe’s 12th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) in Germany has started a relatively large aviation exercise to prepare the unit for the upcoming deployment in Afghanistan on 18 March 2014. Over 40 aircraft of various models are involved: Black Hawks Chinooks and Apaches. The German Army simulates the enemy.

The prep-ex takes place in the skies and on the ground between the Joint Multinational Training Command’s (JMTC) Grafenwoehr Training Area (GTA, Grafenwöhr) and its Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) at the Hohenfels Training Area, to as far as Bad Reichenhall, near the German-Austrian border.

German Bundeswehr soldiers are forming the opposition force (OPFOR) on the ground confronting the 12th CAB Soldiers. From the Hochstaufen Barracks in Bad Reichenhall come elements from the German Army’s elite 23rd Mountaineer Brigade.
