Europe’s newest military airlifter, the Airbus A400M, has successfully completed the first official airdrop trials as part of its flight-test program. Flying over the Fonsorbes drop zone near Toulouse, the Atlas development aircraft with serial EC-404 dropped a range of different loads by parachute during 11 flights over a two-week period. In total it dropped 26 platforms and containers weighing from 255 kg (496 lbs) to 4 tonnes (8,818 lbs) using the ramp aerial-delivery system (RAS-wedge), and 11 bundles weighing from 15 kg (33 lbs) to 320 kg (728 lbs) using the paratrooper doors.
