The Belgian Air Component has joined the French-led operations in Central Africa. Since Wednesday 22 January 2014 the BAC Lockheed C-130H Hercules is officially operational at Libreville in Gabon.
The aircraft from 15 Wing Air Transport at Melsbroek left on 18 January. It will be tasked with transporting troops and materiel between Libreville, Bangui in the Central African Republic, and other cities in the area.
The Belgian Herc will be part of Operation Sangaris. At Libreville the French already established an air bridge for their ongoing ground operations in the area in the beginning of December 2013.
15 Wing’s C-130 will initially be deployed till the end of March. A Belgian Air Component Airbus A330-300 (reg. CS-TMT) earlier performed four long-distance flights from France to the operations theatre in the Central African Republic.
