Boeing delivered the 12th production P-8A Poseidon with serial number 439 to the US Navy on schedule on October 25, 2013.
The P-8A departed Boeing Field in Seattle for Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, where it joined the other Poseidon aircraft being used to train Navy crews. The aircraft is the sixth from the second low-rate initial production contract lot awarded in November 2011. One more P-8A is scheduled to be delivered this year.
The USN ordered a total of 37 P-8A aircraft, but the Navy has plans to purchase a total of 117 Poseidons. The aircraft are basically Boeing 737-800s modified for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. The P-8s will gradually replace the Lockheed P-3 propeller aircraft of the US Navy.
