Russia buys 40 Mil Mi-8AMTSh armoured transport helicopters for the price of more than 331 million euro, announced the state company Russian Helicopters this week. They are likely to be produced at the Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant.

The Mi-8AMTSh is an improved version of the standard Russian transport helicopter Mi-8 (NATO-name Hip). The AMTsh upgrades include armoured protection for the crew, extra fuel tanks and wing pylons to equip the helicopter with f.e. 9M343/9M39 Igla air-to-air missiles, 9M114/9M114M Shturm-V air-to-surface missiles, 23 mm gun pods, and B8V20A rocket pods equipped with S-8 80 mm unguided rockets.

Running up to the coming MAKS 2013 airshow in Moscow the Russian Air Force chief-of-staff said that the Russian Armed Forces will receive 800 aircraft and nearly a thousand helicopters up to the year 2020.
